Dear Colleagues,

Those of us in the agricultural industries know that there are many challenges ahead in continuing to produce food and fibre for a growing population whilst respecting the limitation of planetary resources. There are at present many conferences throughout the world discussing and sharing potential solutions on sustainable food production at the macro and micro levels. Although we may not all agree on the process, it is nevertheless urgent that governments have access to opinions of industry practitioners.

The 5th World Congress for Conservation Agriculture and 3rd Farming Systems Design Conference has seen the benefit of cooperating to offer a broader spectrum of ideas working towards sustainable agricultural practices. The Congress has also been joined by Landcare International to offer a natural resources management perspective to food production. The support of the Australian government at the State and Federal level, research organisations, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, Australian universities along with local farmer groups have made this a truly inclusive congress.

The themes include fundamental farm practices, technology designs, policy frameworks, knowledge sharing, environment and policy initiatives; the details of which are on our website. Spanning four days in the Australian spring of 2011, 26-29 September, we look forward to welcoming you to share your ideas for the future of food production. Many of you would be aware of the floods in Brisbane and the Lockyer valley in South East Queensland, let me assure you as a resident of the region, that the clean up and rebuilding started as soon as the waters receded and we will be more then ready to welcome delegates. The winter and spring are dryer months and we do not anticipate the weather problems of the usual summer rains. Our field day site at the University of Queensland Gatton campus in the Lockyer Valley is in full production with a crop of sorghum ready for harvest.

This is an important global conference; we value your experience and look forward to welcoming you to Brisbane, Australia. We are open for submission of papers and if you would like to keep in touch with updates please register your expression of interest via the website.

Tours

Pre-and post-Congress tours will visit leading farmers, research stations and trial sites. Major tours will give an excellent overview of dryland and irrigated CA, including high-tech PA and CTF applications in large-scale extensive, and some intensive (horticultural) cropping. The pre-congress Sydney-Brisbane tour covers more temperate cropping areas, while the post-congress tour is more subtropical, starting and ending in Brisbane. A one-day post-Congress tour takes in research facilities in Toowoomba, on the Great dividing range. We are also considering the possibility of another post-Congress tour to look briefly at dryland grain production, and then visit and talk with rice-growers in southern New South Wales.

To secure your place please book early or indicate your tour intentions soon, accommodation filling fast.
